Firefighters Work To Contain Wildfire Near Hwy 58

From KVEC 920:

CAL FIRE/San Luis Obispo County Fire Department is still fighting a wildland fire located in the vicinity of Highway 58 (Calf Canyon Highway) and Pozo Road in rural San Luis Obispo County. The fire is burning in grass, brush and oak woodlands and is approximately 640 acres in size and is 20% contained. Currently Parkhill Road is closed starting at Highway 58. An evacuation order has been issued for the homes located on Parkhill Road between Highway 58 and Seven Oaks Road.

Although the fire is located in very rough terrain making access difficult for firefighters, firefighters are cautiously optimistic to be able to hold the fire lines. They say the weather has been cooperating with fire suppression efforts as well. An evacuation shelter has been set up by the American Red Cross at Santa Margarita Elementary School. The HEET (Horse Emergency Evacuation Team) has also set up facilities at the Templeton Live Stock Yard for evacuated animals with feed and water available on site.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Fire officials hope to have Highway 58 open by 5 tonight.
