Up In Years

I'm at a place in my life where errands are

starting to count as going out.
I don't always go the extra mile, but when I do,
It's because I missed my exit.

My goal for 2021 was to lose 10 pounds!
Only have 14 to go.  Ate salad for dinner.
Mostly croutons and tomatoes.  Really just one
big round crouton covered with tomato sauce
and cheese.  FINE, it was a pizza....
OK, I ate a pizza!  Are you happy now?

I just did a week's worth of cardio after walking
into a spider web.

A recent study has found women who carry a little
extra weight live longer than men who mention it.

Kids today don't know how easy they have it.
When I was young, I had to walk 9 feet through shag
carpet to change the TV channel.

Remember back when we were kids and every time it
was below freezing outside they closed school?
Yeah, me neither.

I may not be that funny or athletic or good looking or
smart or talented.  I forgot where I was going with this!

I love being 80, I learn something new every day and
forget 5 other things.

A thief broke into my house last night.  He started
searching for money so I got up and searched with him.

Having plans sounds like a good idea until you have to
put on clothes and leave the house.

It's weird being the same age as old people.
When I was a kid I wanted to be older.....
This is not what I expected.

A Most Important Post -- By Kween Josie of all the Liberty @OfficialTRHL (Twitter)

This is probably the most important thread I will ever do (9/11 rescue dogs, aside.)

I want to tell you about what happened to the 56 signers of The Declaration of Independence. Freedom does not come free. It is pivotal as we devolve into tyranny that we know what that means.

The Continental Congress, approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. 56 men signed it.

Signing the declaration was a sacrifice involving risk. Sometimes those who sacrifice never regain what they gave up. Some don’t see the results that later generations see, enjoy or experience. And the risk might include the ultimate sacrifice – giving one’s life for the cause.

• Five of those 56 Declaration signers were captured by the British and tortured as traitors.

• Four of the 56 Declaration signers lost their sons in the Continental Army or had sons who were captured.

• Nine of the 56 Declaration signers fought and died in the American Revolution.

• 12 of the 56 Declaration signers had their homes looted and destroyed.

Carter Braxton of Virginia was a prosperous planner and trader. His ships were destroyed by the British Navy. He lost his home to pay off the debts and died in poverty.

Thomas McKean of Delaware was harassed mercilessly. His family went into hiding during the war, moving multiple times. He served in Congress without pay and died in poverty.

Frances Hopkins of New Jersey and William Floyd of New York both had their homes confiscated and used as housing by the British. Frances Lewis of New York had his wife imprisoned by the British where she died. He also lost his home and everything in it.

John Hart had to leave his dying wife’s bedside to flee the British. For more than a year, he lived in caves and forests. He returned home to find his wife dead, his 13 children missing & of his property gone. He died shortly after of physical & mental exhaustion & a broken heart.

Lewis Morris and Phillip Livingston died of similar circumstances to Hart’s. Too sad and exhausted to carry on.

Many were bountied, including John Hancock, who was famously insulted by the “low” price on his head.

Declaration signer Richard Stockton, a New Jersey State Supreme Court Justice, returned to his Princeton estate to find that his wife and children were living like refugees after he was betrayed by a Tory sympathizer. British troops captured and tortured him with starvation.

When Stockton was finally released, he went home to find his estate had been looted and burned. He had been so badly beaten in prison that he died before the war’s end. His surviving family lived the rest of their lives off charity.

At the Battle of Yorktown on the York River in Virginia, Thomas Nelson, Jr.’s home had been overrun by British Gen. Charles Cornwallis, who had taken over the his home for headquarters. Nelson urged Gen. George Washington to open fire on his own home.

Washington agreed. This was done, and Nelson’s home was destroyed. Cornwallis later surrendered the British forces at Yorktown in 1781, ending the fighting in the American Revolution. Nelson, one of the brave and noble 56 signers, died bankrupt some years later.

The 56 signers of the Declaration of Independence came from various walks of life. Most were considered well-educated for the time. The 56 included lawyers, store merchants, farmers, teachers, one surveyor (Abraham Clark) and of course one multifaceted genius (Ben Franklin).

Each of them knew the risks that being caught by the British or exposed by a traitor carried. Still, they signed that beautiful document. Still they persisted.

And because of these brave men, many whose names are nearly lost to history, The Declaration of Independence, along with the U.S. Constitution, set the foundation for the greatest nation on earth.

Up until the American experiment, every single ruling class was some kind of dictatorship. But because of those 56 signers, who believed so deeply in freedom, self ownership & a Republican form of government, we had an explosion of innovation, creativity, success, and prosperity.

While I can look at evidence and history and make a qualified logical hypothesis on where the next year, 2 years, of 10 years will take us, we can’t know for sure. But I do know that while America the institution is dying, America the idea still exists in all of us.

And she’s still worth it. Thanks for reading.

My thanks to Josie for allowing me to re-post this thread from her Twitter feed.
And my thanks to those 56 men, and their families to who gave up more than we'll ever know to make the United States of America.

Fight Song

 "Fight Song"

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

Losing friends and I'm chasing sleep
Everybody's worried about me
In too deep
Say I'm in too deep (in too deep)
And it's been two years
I miss my home
But there's a fire burning in my bones
Still believe
Yeah, I still believe

And all those things I didn't say
Wrecking balls inside my brain
I will scream them loud tonight
Can you hear my voice this time?

This is my fight song
Take back my life song
Prove I'm alright song
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

A lot of fight left in me

Like a small boat
On the ocean
Sending big waves
Into motion
Like how a single word
Can make a heart open
I might only have one match
But I can make an explosion

This is my fight song (Hey!)
Take back my life song (Hey!)
Prove I'm alright song (Hey!)
My power's turned on
Starting right now I'll be strong (I'll be strong)
I'll play my fight song
And I don't really care if nobody else believes
'Cause I've still got a lot of fight left in me

No I've still got a lot of fight left in me

Road Signs

 *****************************************

Farmer Jack once lived on a quiet rural highway, but as time went by, the traffic slowly built up and eventually
got so heavy and so fast that his free range chickens were being run over, at a rate of three to six a week.
So Farmer Jack called the local police station to complain,

"You've got to do something about all these people driving so fast and killing all my chickens,"
he said to the local police officer. "What do you want me to do?" asked the policeman.
"I don't care, just do something about those crazy drivers!"
So the next day the policeman had the council erect a sign that said:

SCHOOL CROSSING

Three days later Farmer Jack called the policeman and said,
"You've still got to do something about these drivers.
The school crossing' sign seems to make them go even faster!"
So again, they put up a new sign
SLOW: CHILDREN AT PLAY

That really sped them up. So Farmer Jack called and said,
"Your signs are no good. Can I put up my own sign?"
In order to get Farmer Jack off his back the policeman said,
"Sure. Put up your own sign."
The phone calls to the Police Station stopped, but curiosity got the better of the officer, so he called Farmer Jack,
"How is the problem with the speeding drivers, Did you put up your sign?"
"Oh, I sure did and not one chicken has been killed."

The policeman was really curious and thought he'd better go out and take a look at the sign.
He also thought the sign may be something the police could use elsewhere to slow drivers down

So he drove out to Farmer Jack's house
His jaw dropped the moment he saw the sign . . . .

A rough guide to system mass for Elite: Dangerous

Rough Guidelines for System Mass

Follows the format:  SystemName AA-A x1234

Where x is the system total mass, a letter from A (lightest) to F (heaviest)

A             Low mass planets; rocky, ice, high metal content

B             Same as Above (water worlds, life bearing gas giants)

C             Same as Above (Earth-Like Worlds, water worlds, life bearing gas giants)

D             Neutron Stars, Earth-Like Worlds, Ammonia Worlds, terraformable HMC, life bearing gas giants

E              Neutron Stars, Black Holes

F              Neutron Stars, Wolf-Rayet, B and O class, White Dwarf

G             Neutron Stars, Black Holes, Binary Pulsar

H             Neutron Stars, Black Holes, Wolf-Rayet, B and O class

G and H mass are not picked up by the GalMap, use Non-Sequence Stars

ELWs tend to be more likely in D mass systems

This is only a guide.  Not every system will have the exact items in it.

Will be edited as new data arrives.

From CMDR Buttsteak

 Optimizing Performance for Odyssey

Preface: This is very much a YMMV guide and I cannot guarantee significant performance increases as hardware performance varies with each unique setup, but the aim here is to optimize on your end as much as possible.

First we’ll start with your GPU Drivers, mainly focused on NVidia users, but this will also apply to AMD users as well. I cannot speak for iGPU users regarding this step.

First, let’s download DDU from Guru3D. As of the current date of publication (30-May-2021), the most up to date version is 18.0.3.9 (https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html)

DDU is a GPU driver cleanup and uninstaller that will completely remove registry entries, files and any other miscellaneous items from your GPU driver installation.

Once this is downloaded, download another utility called NVCleanInstall

NVClean install will allow you to install the most recent driver or one that you can select manually from a drop-down menu. This utility also allows you to make the selection of what components will be installed, so you can bypass all the telemetry garbage that is normally unavoidable and also if you wish, bypass the GeForce Experience component from installing.

These miscellaneous items usually take up resources that would otherwise be used elsewhere.

Once you have these two items downloaded, we’re going to proceed to uninstalling your GPU drivers with DDU in Windows Safe mode.

1 - On the Windows sign-in screen, press and hold the Shift key while you select the Power  > Restart .

2 - After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.

3 - After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or F4 to start your PC in safe mode. Or if you'll need to use the Internet, select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

Once in Safe Mode, launch the DDU executable you downloaded earlier, Select your Graphics Driver, then select Clean and Restart. This will completely remove your GPU drivers.

Once your PC has been rebooted, open the NVCleanInstall executable you downloaded earlier as well. Choose your driver version or use the first selection “Install best driver for my hardware”. The download should begin and you should be able to select the components you want to have installed. The defaults should be fine unless you would like to install other components like GFE or Ansel. Make sure to leave the Telemetry option unchecked though as it is entirely useless from a gaming perspective.

Once you’ve completed the previous steps, you should see an NVidia installer screen appear. Make sure to select Clean Install here. After that your GPU drivers should be at a clean state of install.

Now we’ll move into the next few steps to ensure you’re optimizing as well as you can for Windows 10 and your hardware.

Right click the Start menu and select Settings

In the search bar, type Graphics and select the Graphics Settings result. In this menu, make sure to enable the Hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling and add your Elite Dangerous executable into the Graphics Performance Preference settings by clicking Browse and then navigating to your E:D Executable.

Once added, make sure to select the E:D entry and click Options, followed by selecting the High Performance button, then select Save.

Almost done!

Enable Ultimate Performance power mode

(Note: You need to have adequate cooling to better support this mode. If your CPU cooler does not have a high wattage rating, use High Performance instead. AMD Ryzen users should stick with the Recommended AMD Balanced, preferably.)
Right Click the Start Menu and select Command Prompt (Admin) or PowerShell (Admin)

Copy and paste the string below and enter it into the command-line:

powercfg -duplicatescheme e9a42b02-d5df-448d-aa00-03f14749eb61

This will work for W10 Home and Power users

Once that’s done, open the Control Panel and select Power Options and select the           Ultimate Performance button.

High Precision Event Timer (HEPT)

This bit is a bit more of an advanced move but if your motherboard and processor support HPET (High Precision Event Timer), it might be worth your time to go through the steps of disabling it.

For this, I’ll leave you with an LTT post from 2018 about how to go about seeing if your hardware supports it and if it is enabled. It is important to note however, that you will need to refer to your motherboard’s manual to see if your board supports this function so that you can disable it at the hardware level before you move to disabling it at the OS level.

IT IS HIGHLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU DO NOT DISABLE IN ONE AREA AND NOT THE OTHER

For NVidia users:

Open the NVidia control panel and select Manage 3D settings. I’ll include screenshots here of my settings. Again, YMMV but these settings work for me:

Windows services to disable (Win+R, services.msc) :

  1. Windows Defender & Firewall

  2. Windows Mobile Hotspot Service

  3. Bluetooth Support Service (If you do not use BT devices)

  4. Print Spooler (Required for Printing)

  5. Fax

  6. Remote Desktop Configuration and Remote Desktop Services

  7. Windows Insider Service

  8. Secondary Logon

  9. Downloaded Maps Manager

  10. Touch Keyboard and Handwriting Panel Service

  11. Offline Files

  12. Windows Connect Now

  13. Remote Registry

  14. Application Layer Gateway Service

  15. Smart Card

  16. Windows Image Acquisition

  17. Security Center

  18. Connected User Experiences and Telemetry

  19. Retail Demo Service

  20. Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service

  21. AllJoyn Router Service

  22. Geolocation Service

  23. Windows Biometric Service (Required for Fingerprint logon)

  24. Program Compatibility Assistant Service

  25. Enterprise App Management Service

Final notes and thoughts:

While completing these steps might not give you the ultimate performance in Odyssey, they will hopefully assist in improving your hardware performance potential in not just this game but others as well.

There is no doubt or misunderstanding that E:D Odyssey needs a significant optimization pass in areas that significantly impact performance, but I can say, sitting here using an 8700k and GTX 1080ti that while in space and on surfaces that do not have a large settlement in front of me, the performance is at an acceptable level and it’s only when approaching those large settlements where I notice a significant decrease in the UX regarding framerates and frametimes.

Hope this helps!
